Janeway is still settling into a seat, feeling like a junior officer all over again -- a new post, on a ship one is still familiarizing herself with, with a new captain and crew. She doesn't even have a phaser at her side, as is sometimes procedure in case of boarders when expecting to go into combat. But she did think to pick up an omnicorder in the scramble following the alert.

She joined Basroil to help adapt systems for a crew without Lafiel's biological advantages, so it only makes sense she's keying up engineering at her station. Someone on the bridge has got to make sure everything's working right when the ship starts exchanging fire, after all.

And until there's problems, probably best that she doesn't break into things with any unnecessary updates. She'll simply note, "Ready," and give a nod in Lafiel's direction if the captain looks for any confirmation.
