Engineer's Log, Stardate ???

Since being given leave to wander the city, Geordi had spent a lot of time at the Renaissance Center. He'd discovered the database accessible from the communicator quickly enough, but there was something constraining about staying in the cramped temporary quarters to read it, and out in the city at large, the distractions were innumerable.

It had made the discovery of the library and museum building at the Renaissance Center invaluable. With his meeting with Science Captain McEngineer hinging on the arrival of the Glorious Dream of Uncontested Starfall, Geordi had found himself at loose ends for an uncertain number of days, but he was determined to use it productively- and that was where the database came in. No matter the outcome of that meeting, after all, he'd still have to figure out a way to get by here until the problem with the fold-space accident could be reversed, and that would require learning about this Fleet, in every way he could.

When he'd started out, finding a datapad and a open seat in the building, it had seemed like a good idea, but now, hours later, after more pages than he could count, he realized he was reading each sentence several times over to actually pick up the information. With a huge sigh, Geordi leaned back in his chair, and ran his hands over his face. "I feel like I'm back at the Academy," he said, slightly louder than he'd intended.

Obi-Wan takes the seat, setting down his own pad. "You could say that. I'm particularly interested in the history of the military and its government that we currently find ourselves in." He's happy to lend his services to a cause, but he wants to make certain that it's a good one first.

"And you? Before your nap at any rate." He speaks softy and gives a gentle smile, meaning nothing but friendliness behind the teasing words.

The remark is taken in the good humor it was intended in, if Geordi's wry smile is any indication. He taps the screen of his own pad. "The idea was to do the same thing you are, but you see how well that's going." Despite the talk of a nap, Geordi looks more awake already, with a conversation to focus on.

"Honestly, I'm more interested in this fold-space engine."

"I find that opening a dialogue helps to retain ideas, if not starting new ones." And of course, the was always the possibility of giving Geordi a nudge that may or may not be Force induced.

"Fold-space?" Obi-Wan leans forward a little. "Could you tell me what it is you know? Space travel isn't my specialty, but I will do what I can to follow along. Apologies if I ask you to repeat yourself or use smaller words."

"No more than you do," Geordi admitted regretfully. "But when I asked about the device that made all this happen- the briefing wasn't the most detailed on that, not that I blame them- the Ensign that answered me told me a bit more about it, and helped me schedule an appointment with the inventor."

He laced his fingers together as he rested his hands on the table in front of him. "If this were just standard faster-than-light transportation it wouldn't be nearly as complicated. Dimensions and time are a bit far out of my expertise."

The inventor could probably shed some light on areas of concern that as of now had few answers. He hopes that Geordi has a productive meeting.

But now that the subject of time and space was broached, it opens up yet another question. "Have you been able to discern even a little about where you are from in relation to the fleet? Our homes don't exist here that we know of, but everyone comes from some time as well."

"Well, that's a bit complicated." Geordi's smile is wry. "And it brings up the question of whether it's even relevant, in a completely different universe."

But apparently that isn't his entire answer, because a moment later, he continues. "As far as I know, the place they're trying to get back to is the one I'm from. From what they mentioned of Old Earth calendars, I'd say the time's off from a few hundred years of what I'm familiar with. As for the technology, that seems more complicated to make a judgement on."

It doesn't matter to Obi-Wan whether or not it's relevant to the fleet, but it is relevant to him. He likes Geordi, and though it might not be wise to make friends if their stay is only temporary, the error has already been made. In every civilization, people got to know each other, and it was up to the refugees to make their own.

"Since arriving I've heard much talk of Earth, it seemed like a form of common ground, regardless of the when." In truth, it's a bit disconcerting to be from a world so unfamiliar from everyone else. "What is it like?"
