Engineer's Log, Stardate ???

Since being given leave to wander the city, Geordi had spent a lot of time at the Renaissance Center. He'd discovered the database accessible from the communicator quickly enough, but there was something constraining about staying in the cramped temporary quarters to read it, and out in the city at large, the distractions were innumerable.

It had made the discovery of the library and museum building at the Renaissance Center invaluable. With his meeting with Science Captain McEngineer hinging on the arrival of the Glorious Dream of Uncontested Starfall, Geordi had found himself at loose ends for an uncertain number of days, but he was determined to use it productively- and that was where the database came in. No matter the outcome of that meeting, after all, he'd still have to figure out a way to get by here until the problem with the fold-space accident could be reversed, and that would require learning about this Fleet, in every way he could.

When he'd started out, finding a datapad and a open seat in the building, it had seemed like a good idea, but now, hours later, after more pages than he could count, he realized he was reading each sentence several times over to actually pick up the information. With a huge sigh, Geordi leaned back in his chair, and ran his hands over his face. "I feel like I'm back at the Academy," he said, slightly louder than he'd intended.

Geordi tilted his head as he considered the thought. "You know, it's strange to put it on the same level as a transporter," he said. "But they might as well have been attempting to create a wormhole..." but there he trailed off, as he considered both the sentence, and the person who said them. "But from the sound of it, you're more familiar with both dimensions and teleportation than you think they are."

"Intra- and interplanar transport is standard magical theory."

Aibghalien left his sentence on that note as he looked up, considering not just the library or the Renaissance Center, but the ship as a whole. Reluctant to admit any potential advantage technology might have, he nevertheless, in service of the complete truth, added, "Although not on the scales in question here. It generally tends to be personal or small groups."

Magical theory. Something about the utter solemnity with which this man said the phrase left Geordi silent for a moment. He found himself wondering about it- theory would seem to suggest there had been some scientific method applied to it, but there had been many kinds of science that proved little more than superstition…

In the end, Geordi chose a more diplomatic approach, rather than pointing that out. “It might not be something they use here,” he said instead. “I’ve never heard of magical theory, myself.”

"As has proven a depressingly common state of affairs," Aibghalien sighed. Well, had anyone actually done a reasonable study of magic around here, none of them would be here in the first place, so QED. "However, lack of study is not lack of presence --" he motioned to the books which floated next to him, actually carried by an unseen servant, "and since basic thaumaturgy functions properly here, it stands to reason that its application can aid in resolving our current situation."

For all his skepticism before, Geordi leaned forward, a curious look spreading across his face. "Functions here? Do you think it would be possible to give a demonstration?" But his questioning line of thought didn't stop there. Now that the cogs in his head had begun turning, they weren't about to stop. "Has anyone told you about Science Captain McEngineer? Apparently he's the one behind the device that did all this, and if you know something that might make it work, I'm sure he'd be glad to hear it."

"I have an appointment with him arranged," Aibghalien said as he casually snapped his fingers, then spoke an arcane word. Four glowing spheres of light appeared around him, not particularly bight and faintly haunting, as if glimpsed from the corner of an eye. "This is an incredibly basic spell, called dancing lights. A cantrip, basically, which summons four directable lights for the space of a minute."

When the lights appeared, Geordi leaned in, not even bothering to hide his interest. "Wish I had a tricorder right about now," he said sotto voce as he put a hand to his VISOR, tilting his head to take in the lights. "That's amazing. Where does the energy come from?"
