But... what are we do to when... we don't know what our purpose is, any longer?

Money paid by parishioners to the church. Apparently they weren't paying enough, so I was going to be used to literally put the fear of god into them... and kill anyone who didn't pay as a demonstration.

That seems so strange. You're all the same kind. Why would some be different than others?

Individualism. It's generally a trait of being human. Or any kind of animal.

So... It's a trait of living things.

Well... it can be for machines, too. Some machines... Maybe even you? I mean, you're sitting here questioning your purpose, instead of going down a pre-programmed path. That takes at least some kind of higher cognitive function, to pose philosophical questions like that.

Is that truly something only living things can do?

I'm... not really an expert on existentialism or any kind of philosophy at all, really. In spite of being raised by monks.

But I had a... we'll call him a 'friend'. And he was a robot. And in spite of how annoying he was, he definitely had those traits.

So... he was alive?

Even if he was just a robot?

I think, as far as robots go, so long as they aren't permanently deactivated? They're alive.
